Global Health

Global health challenges, including chronic and infectious disease, do not recognize borders. Public health crises or disease outbreaks in one part of the world can threaten other parts of the globe within days, if not hours. The health of the world’s population is intertwined with broader issues, including wealth disparity, environmental degradation, government policy and human rights. York’s Global Health Degree (BA and BSc) examines these and many other issues with a focus on preparing the next generation of health leaders with the knowledge and skills for careers in education, research, health systems, planning, policy and more in the non-profit, government and private sectors, locally, nationally and internationally. Students will benefit from the flexibility of online and blended (online and in-class) courses, along with a practicum in their fourth year working in the field with academic institutions and NGOs in Canada or overseas.

Bachelor of Arts in Global Health (BA) (120 credits)

Bachelor of Science in Global Health (BSc) (120 credits)

Both degree options combine core, foundational courses that all students take including Determinants of Health, Global Health Research Methods & Measurement, Health and Human Rights, Global Health Policy: Power and Politics, Program/Healthcare Planning, and Global Health Governance and Leadership. In addition to core courses, students can choose elective courses shaped to their individual interests and specialize in areas such as health promotion and disease management; global health policy; systems and management; global e-health; and global health and the environment.

Students will graduate with an understanding and knowledge of global health architecture, comparative health systems, health information and communication technology, challenges of community empowerment in resource-poor settings, the nature, dynamics and impact of international migration on human resources for health, and health care financing and health sector reform across cultures and countries. Students will benefit from the flexibility of online and blended (online and in-class) courses, along with a practicum in their fourth year working in the field with academic institutions and NGOs in Canada or overseas.
